Do you ever look back and laugh at all the things you said you would never do because you realize that you broke that vow long ago. Things like: I will never let my kid sleep in my bed, I will never have an artificial tree at Christmas (promise broken for the McArthurs Christmas 2007, and it has been a glorious fake tree time since), or I will never pay someone to put up Christmas lights. This last certainty is yet to be done away, but after our lighting of the house this year, we may consider it in 2010. Here's our neighbor's house:
We envisioned something like this for our home, but it ended up like this:
It's fine, I know, but mini-lights are not my thing for outdoors, I requested the large ones, but this is what we got. Now, that isn't the reason for the possibility of paying someone to do this for us next year. Dave, in all his handy glory offered to help our neighbor hang his lights on his tall house because they could do it faster if they worked together and our neighbor is slightly squeamish with heights. (different neighbor than the one who occupies the picture above). So, as Dave was on the ladder at our friends' house, the ladder slips and Dave is hanging on to their house by the rain gutter. After the ladder punched a hole in the stucco and dropped to the ground, Dave knew it was also his time to release to the concrete below. Our neighbor caught Dave and they landed with their faces inches from each other and eyes as wide as could be. Grant, witnessed the whole thing and came inside to tell me. He said, "Mom, Dad needs you. He fell off the ladder on Mr. Taylor.....it was AWESOME!" Everyone is fine and honestly, it is pretty funny. He wasn't too high off the ground, but we may be considering other options for next year!
The other day Grant handed me a french fry (anyone out there say their kids would never eat fast food:)?) . I told him thanks and he said " I want to give you this fry mom because that's what Christmas is all about-GIVING." Excellent reflection time for me at the local Wendy's. I was glad to be reminded of all I have been given and want to give. Thanks Grant!

I just laught HARD out loud!! I love the lights. I would vote for going and getting a few more the day after Christmas when they go on sale for half price.
Only Dave, and possibly Christian could do something like that. Your lights are really......nice. Hope your holidays are wonderous, I miss ya so much!
This is why you need to post more often--because it brings a smile to my day and a laugh to my lips! (okay that was a little cornbally) but seriously, what a great story. Also, so agree with you on how many things you do as a parent that you swore you never would. Love that Grant understands what Christmas is aboutand that he knows when something is truly awesome!
Thanks for the good laugh and hope you are feeling well! Love ya!
Sounds like a scene from a sitcom or a holiday comedy--made me laugh! I am glad Dave is okay, and the neighbor for that matter.
Thanks for the laugh. Love how the lights turned out! ;)
Oh how I miss living next to you guys.
Y'all always have those "kodak moment" kind of stories to tell....love it! I'm still laughing as I can't seem to shake the visual I have of David hangin from the roof...LOL!!!!! Maybe Curt can give him a few pointers.
Our house is outlined in lights this year (thanks to my hubby) & its soo pretty :) But, I will have to confess that my fear of heights made me act like a crazed, Nervous Nelly. I DID NOT venture up the ladder like David did, but then again, I think its a testosterone thing....Curt would tell me to "leave him be" b/c the ladder is his friend. hehe That must be guy talk for "i'm fine, & no, I'm not gonna fall!" Well, in the end, he didn't fall (thank goodness!) & the results were well worth all the stress.
Glad to hear David's ok...& my vote is to hire it out next year. If we lived closer, I'm sure he & Curt could share a wonderful bonding session over putting lights on...awwww!
I love this post!!!
Ok sorry I just have to comment again... I reread your post to Ryan and we are just sitting here cracking up!
Merry Christmas friend... I don't have your new address. Sorry for the lack of sending Christmas cards this year. (next year will be better, right?!) :)
So, not to act like a stalker or anything but I looked at your picture of your house, saw that it looks like the ones in my MIL's neighborhood so I mapquested it and it turns out that you live .38 miles from her house! Nuts, eh? Anyway, when Matt and I went up to his mom's Christmas night for dinner, we found your house right off. The lights were a dead giveaway. Anyway, YOU"RE AWESOME!
Kara,
It is 11:42 p.m., Russell is sleeping, and I just busted out laughing when I read this. Thankfully he is still snoring!! Yes, I think you need to hire someone for your lights this Christmas. And what are you going to do with that Grant Man. He is too funny. Personality plus that is for sure.
